DE Web Team Kick-off Meeting
2/25/97 1:00 - 3:00
HQ 3454
Attendees: Linda Koch, Joy Batterson, Bill
Williams, Dave Roberts, Paul Mogan, Scott Thorne, Richard Hall,
Marie Goodson
Absent:Tamara Johnson, David Metcalf
Meeting Objectives
- The overall objective of the meeting was for
all the Web Team members to meet one another and to cover the
goals of the DE Web Team
Introductions
- Each attendee introduced themselves and gave
a little background on their web activities.
Web Team Purpose
- The DE Web Team was proposed and approved by
the DE managers. The proposal was documented in DE Web Development Team memo from
the DE Webmaster which was handed out at the meeting.
- The overall goal is to get the DE organizations
responsibilities, capabilities and achievements on the web.
- Participation on this team should not impact
the employees other duties. If that becomes a problem, please
let Linda know. That was the main concern raised when the team
concept was presented to the managers.
- The currently file structure on the DE Web (on
VAX Cluster) is based on the organizational layout (DE to DL to
DL-DSD and so on). The recommendation is to make it a more functionally
based structure which is not dependent on the orgcharts. This
was just a preliminary discussion to get team members thinking
about how we could better structure the site. This item will be
an on-going task in this process.
Standards & Guidelines
- The DE Standards and Guidelines were
passed out and reviewed.
- Paul Mogan raised the concern regarding implied
"endorsements" of products. The lab which he represents
routinely does evaluations of products. The question was if they
put their evaluation results on the web, is it deemed an endorsement
based on their findings. Their evaluation is based on the government
requirements vs. General use of the products. Possible recommendations
were to put a disclaimer on the pages to be presented on the WWW,
document what the requirements the evaluation was based on and
whether they did/did not meet said requirements.
Along the same lines, it was asked if endorsements are implied
by linking to various commercial sites such as Adobe for the free
Acrobat Reader software. Many of the commercial links to such
vendors as Silicon Graphics are to aid the employees in doing
their jobs.
Web Document
- A very preliminary cut of a Engineering Development (DE) Web Guide was
handed out. This guide basically summarizes what was documented
in the DE Management Instruction ,
but will also explain the procedure for submitting data for the
web, the DE Web structure, Standards and Guidelines. All Team
members were asked to look it over. Linda will be putting it on
the web.
Web Structure
- Servers:
- www-de.ksc.nasa.gov - This is the primary
DE Web Server
- KSCDL2 : Alpha 7000-610 (OpenVMS)
- (KSCDL1 - backup): VAX (OpenVMS)
- Edsel: Alpha 3000-400 (UNIX)
- DE-NTS1 System: Alpha Server 2000-4 (NT) **
- clcs.ksc.nasa.gov - This server is dedicated
to the CLCS project
- DEC Alpha (UNIX)
- SG (Intranet)
- technology.ksc.nasa.gov - This server is dedicated
to the Technology and Commercialization office.
Future DE Web Plans
- Restructuring of Web based on functionality not
orgcharts
- It was agreed that the structure based on functionality
would be better, however, concern was raised on the impact to
existing pages. There will be additional help throughout the transition
by both Linda and the contractors supporting the DE Web development.
- Personnel Biography pages auto generated
- A script is being generated to develop consistent
personnel bios for all DE employees. The script will pull the
location data from the X-500. Employees can have a picture on
the bio and submit job responsibilities.
Other Issues
- Java
- Currently, all of DE is to have active content
(JAVA, ActiveX, Javascript) disabled in their browsers. This is
based on a NASIRC Bulletin and recommendation distributed from
the DE office.
- Personnel Bios (SEE ABOVE)
Open
- Will their be training?
- At this point, unsure of the training budget.
If we determine it is required, Linda can attempt to get training
scheduled.
- Will their be publishing packages procured for
team members?
- Not anticipated at this time. There is a procurement
currently going through so that we will have validation tools
available. The plan is to incorporate the tools into the DE Web
so that developers can run the tests when needed. In the interim,
email the URL to Linda and she will run the report and store it
off on the VAX so you can access it.
NEXT MEETING will be during the week of March 10.
